Elk River Wildlife Area Access Project

Location: Elk River, Humboldt Bay
Cooperating Agencies: City of Eureka
Funding Sources: City of Eureka

The City of Eureka Community Services Department has proposed this project with planning and permitting assistance from the Natural Resources Services Division of Redwood Community Action Agency (RCAA).

This project will develop a multi-use public access trail in the Wildlife Area on land managed by the City of Eureka and the State Department of Fish & Game (DFG). Day-use and trail support facilities are planned to provide coastal access to the southern portion of Eureka's waterfront west of US 101 near the Bayshore Mall and behind Pierson Building Center.

The 300 acre Elk River Wildlife Area protects Humboldt Bay's largest estuary and features waveswept beaches, saltwater and freshwater marches, and excellent shorebird watching. Use Trusdale Avenue, Hilfiker Lane, or Pound Road (off of the Herrick Avenue Park and Ride) to access the site.
